The omens were not looking good for play as the weather forecast changed 5 times in the 12 hours leading up to start of play – however at 1330 hours prompt the rain stopped and the Sun started to peak through meaning we got away with a slightly delayed start reducing the match to a 40 over encounter. The ‘Braunton bowl’ weather effect took hold with a drying breeze helping things along.
Ben Ayres the D+C captain won the toss and put North Wales into bat with W. Evans (c) and D. Midgley making a brisk start making 28 off the first 3 overs with O Lloyd (8-39-2) then slowing things up taking 2 wickets in the his 2nd and 3rd overs, Evans for 19 and Hughes in at 3 for 10.
Midgely went next on 15 bringing Stevens and Pearson to the crease making 21 and 15 respectively the latter one of 3 catches taken by P Davey. The run rate was slowing at this point thanks to some accurate bowling from Lloyd. D Evans made 25, 15 in singles and one boundary before falling to the safe hands of Davey bowled Davies(7.1-1-18-4) for his first of 4. Bennett didn’t trouble the scorers being trapped LBW to Davey bringing in S. Williams who had a productive innings dispatching M Brown for several maximums getting 45 befotre being bowled by Davies. Ben Ayers behind the stumps saw off P Williams with fast hands to Davies for his third, Anderson being his 4th victim bowled ending the innings on 39.1 overs. Watkin not out on 12.
195 the target for victory now in bright sunshine. Openers Davey and Barott started in a much steadier pace getting to 15 off 6 overs when Davey was caught by Evans ((8-1-35-2) bringing in Ayers who scored a quick 6 runs before being caught and bowled off Evans the following over taking it to 23-2. Barrot and Temple Smith then batted together for some time making 72 and 38 respectively. Barott eventually being caught off P Williams and Temple smith the first of 4 victims for Midgley. (7.3-1-41-4).
Challoner got a quick 11 before going LBW to Midgley and Owen Lloyd hit 31 quick runs pushing the total along after the run rate had trailed off.
Evans and Pearson (5-2-6-2) bowling in the last 6 overs were very tight and the finish was set to be very exciting. The last 3 overs saw D+C needing 6 to win with Osborne and Davies in bat. Pearson bowled 2 maidens for his Captain under pressure to increase the tension with the final runs being taken off Midgley by Gary Osborne in a 4.
D+C win their first game back in the PSUK competition in a tight thrilling finish.
