The 2022 tour started off in fine style with an emphatic win over hosts Camberley CC. Under the warm Surrey sun, the track was rock hard and bone dry so after winning the toss, skipper Micky Martin wasted no time in electing to bat.
He must have slightly rued this decision, though, when opener Matt Sisson chipped the fourth ball of the innings to cover leaving BPCC 1 for 1. In at 3 was debutant ‘Big’ Dave Roffey and he and the other opener Stuart Drakeley set to work, racking up 193 runs in the next 24 overs. Drakeley retired Not Out on 100 off 60 balls (including 17 fours and 2 sixes) and the Camberley bowlers must have been happy to see him walk off the field.
Roffey fell tragically short of a maiden debut ton on 93 in the 26th over (including 16 fours and 2 sixes), bringing wicket keeper Gary Knight to the crease. The next 9 overs turned into a run-fest with the Knights adding 117 runs before Tom Knight was caught in the 36th over for 78 off 36 balls (6 fours and 7 sixes) and Gary Knight getting bowled four overs later for 43 off 22 balls (7 fours and 1 six).
Sam Godfrey and Callum Storey batted nicely, adding a further 37 before Storey was caught on 11 in the 40th over, leaving Micky Martin to face the final ball of the innings, which he danced past with a booming drive and was castled for a golden duck. BPCC ended their 40 overs on 366 for 6. This was the 4th highest 2nd wicket partnership (Drakeley & Roffey 193), the 6th highest 3rd wicket partnership (Knight and Knight 117) and the 4th highest score by a debutant (Roffey 93) in recorded BPCC history.
In reply, CCC never got going. Opening bats Tim Hughes nicking off the bowling of Will Heather in the 3rd over for 2 and Jaz Ahluwalia chipping to Dom Manthorpe at cover in the 7th over for 9. The only batsman who offered any resistance was number 3 Liam Crawford until he was caught at slip off the bowling of Joe Flatt for 19. The rest of the innings was a procession of wickets – Tom Wright was caught behind in the 13th over for 2, Ben White thought he’d cleared short extra cover but didn’t account for just how tall Dave Roffey is, getting caught for 9. Roffey then had Kyle Elliott caught behind in the 21st over for 5 and Sam Godfrey had both Ethan Ellner and Kai Dover in the 24th over, for 5 and 0 respectively. Roffey then pouched the last 2 wickets in the 25th over, finishing the CCC innings on 60 all out. Notable bowling figures from Joe Flatt (5 overs, 4 maidens, 3 for 5) and Dave Roffey completing an all-round debut (4 overs, 3 maidens, 3 for 2)
