Day one of the 2023 tour saw BPCC take on the Leicestershire County Academy U18s.
BPCC skipper Michael Martin won the toss and asked the U18 side to bat first. Things got off to a bright start with paceman Dominic Manthorpe nicking off openers Sam Jarvis and Oliver Dring for 12 and 11 respectively in the first 7 overs. However the upper middle order proved tricky to get out with Jake Tarling and Jamie Dunk building a partnership of 40 before left arm spinner Joe Flatt had Tarling caught by Tom Knight.
Dunk and new man Sam Wood then set about the next 15 overs, building a solid 66 partnership before Wood holed out to Dave Roffey off the bowling of Stuart Drakeley. After reaching his half century off 64 balls, it was Dunk’s turn to exit, with debutants Hayden Tice and Sam Baugh linking up for a catch of the other’s bowling.
A brisk innings of 16 off 15 balls for captain Rishi Herath came to an end when he chipped one to Tom Knight off the bowling of Baugh, who immediately struck again, pinning Liam Tew in front of middle the next ball. The end of the innings was accelerated by Uttam Ramji and Jay Maden who both ended not out on 28. The Academy ended the innings on 208 for 7.
In reply, things got off to a shaky start when Will Evans mistimed a pull shot first ball and was caught. Things didn’t improve with Matt Sisson (4), Stuart Drakeley (2), Tom Knight (3), Dave Roffey (0) and Joe Flatt (4) all departing in rapid succession leaving BPCC reeling at 17 for 6 in the 10th over. Captain Micky Martin and Dominic Manthorpe saved BPCC’s graces by spending the next 19 overs putting together a 102 run partnership (the joint second highest 7th wicket partnership in BPCC history). Unfortunately the top spot was not to be when Manthorpe decided on a suicide single and was run out by a direct hit for 65 (a new BPCC best for him). Martin was also out in the next over for 29. Some powerful hitting from debutant Sam Baugh gave a glimmer of hope but this was snuffed out when he was caught in the 32nd over for 35. Hayden Tice and Lewis Jones battled hard but ultimately it was the Academy side who would win the day by 21 runs when Alex Green dismissed Tice for 13, leaving Jones not out on 11
